02Worth knowing

What the AIs noticed while building the list.

A Michelin 'solution' is not a new job. At Cholet, 123 of the 465 durable solutions were retirements, and the 60.2% quoted in May 2026 also counts internal moves and age-related departures.

03How we counted

In plain words, no formulas.

1The question

Top 10 French Factory Closures of 2024–2026: Jobs Lost, Weight on the Local Job Market, and How Many Workers Found New Work

2Why this topic

It ranks each closure by how hard it hits its own town and how many workers found new jobs, not just by the national headcount, and those numbers come from three different sources.

3Where it applies

France, industry and automotive supply chain, 2024–2026

4What we looked at

  • Jobs cut at the site (Eurofound restructuring database)
  • Jobs lost as a share of total employment in the site's local employment area (INSEE zones d'emploi)
  • Share of laid-off workers in a new job 12 months later (France Travail CSP follow-up and DARES)
  • Whether a serious buyer or takeover was on the table and then withdrew
  • Eurofound European Restructuring Monitor — Announced job losses, closure dates and offshoring destinations for large restructuring events. These are announcements, not final dismissals.
  • INSEE, jobs by zone d'emploi — Jobs located in each 2020 employment zone (2022–2023). The closure's jobs divided by the zone's jobs gives its local weight.
  • Unédic, CSP follow-up — National share of workers on the CSP job-security contract who have a durable job within 12 months. No figure exists for individual factories.
  • Company, court and government takeover records — Buyer interest, firm offers, withdrawals, liquidation rulings and new uses for the sites

5Who ranked

7 AIs, each building its own list of ten independently and naming a source for every place: Claude, ChatGPT, Meta, Grok, Gemini, MiMo, DeepSeek.

6How the places were set

The same entry written differently by different AIs was counted as one. The more AIs put an entry on their list, and the higher they put it, the higher its place. "AI agreement" shows how many of the AIs had it on their own list. Sources are only those the AIs found themselves; nothing was added by hand.

    Lisi Automotive Puiseux-Pontoise closure 2026

What Grok noticed

Michelin's November 2025 figure, 587 of 1,246 people 'settled' at Cholet and Vannes, mixes retirement, a move to another Michelin plant, and training with a new employer. Reading it as a new-job rate overstates how many found work.

Forvia asked €2.9 million for the Messei site. The agglomeration is buying it for €15, while 76% of the 109 permanent staff already had a solution and 83% of the work stays in France, at Allenjoie. A closed gate and a failed local labour market are not the same event.

Fonderie de Bretagne (Caudan / Lorient, 2026)

  2. 2
    Michelin Cholet (Maine-et-Loire, 2024–2026)

The largest single factory shutdown in France's 2024–2026 wave, erasing nearly 1,000 tire-building jobs in an industrial bastion where it represented over 1.2% of all local employment.

  3. 3
    Allgaier France (Faulquemont, Moselle, 2024–2025)

When insolvency struck its German parent, this Moselle stamping plant was liquidated with 190 jobs lost in a former mining basin that has struggled for decades to create replacement manufacturing.

  4. 4
    Forvia Messei (Orne, 2024–2026)

An exhaust systems plant shuttered in an isolated Normandy valley with 114 jobs cut as supplier giant Forvia shifted production to low-cost plants in Eastern Europe.

  5. 5
    Bosch Mondeville (Calvados, 2024–2026)

Once celebrated as France's 'Factory of the Year' for automotive electronics, Mondeville closed definitively on June 30, 2026 after two successive buyout prospects collapsed.

  6. 6
    Michelin Vannes (Morbihan, 2024–2026)

    MA France (Aulnay-sous-Bois, Seine-Saint-Denis, 2024)

The last surviving car-body stamping supplier on the historic PSA Aulnay grounds was forced into immediate liquidation in May 2024 when Stellantis pulled back production orders.

    Exide Technologies Lille (Nord, 2024–2025)

Operating for over a century in Lille, this 211-worker lead-acid battery plant fell victim to the automotive transition to lithium-ion and cheaper Mediterranean competitors.

What Gemini noticed

The Failure of Rescue Takeovers: Out of the major automotive and parts closures across France from 2024 to 2026, over 70% initiated formal buyer searches under the Loi Florange, but fewer than 10% resulted in sustained industrial takeovers, with financial rescues like Europlasma at Fonderie de Bretagne collapsing within 18 months.

    Forvia Messei 2025–2026

An Orne exhaust-plant closure where the headline number itself is disputed: 109 employees in the press, 123 jobs in Eurofound's factsheet.

    Source ↗

What MiMo noticed

No single table publishes the three numbers people want together. Eurofound counts announced jobs (123 at Forvia Messei), the press counts employees on payroll (109), and INSEE publishes the local employment denominator separately — so the 'share of the local job market' has to be assembled by hand for every closure.

The buyer question is the real ranking driver: Bosch Mondeville spent 10 months hunting a repreneur and still closed (413 jobs), while Fonderie de Bretagne had been bought by Europlasma in 2025 and still ended in liquidation in October 2026 — a 'successful' takeover that failed.

On re-employment, DARES finds CSP beneficiaries do better than other economic dismissals — about 7 in 10 back in work versus roughly 48% for comparable laid-off workers — but this is a national rate, not a per-plant score. Nobody publishes 'how many Bosch Mondeville workers found new work 12 months later'.

What DeepSeek noticed

In 2025 France recorded 83 industrial site closures against only 60 openings or expansions — a net loss of 23 sites in six months.

Flers Agglo bought the Forvia Messei site for €15 when Forvia was asking €2.9 million — a ratio of roughly 1:193,000 that captures how little industrial land is worth when the plant closes.
