03How we counted

In plain words, no formulas.

1The question

Top 10 Champions League home grounds where stronger visitors struggle most, and what makes them hard

2Why this topic

It separates grounds whose results go beyond ordinary home advantage from ordinary home wins, then breaks that surplus down into conditions, travel and quality.

3Where it applies

UEFA Champions League home matches, 2024/25 through October 15, 2026

4What we looked at

  • Home points won against higher-rated visitors, minus the points expected from pre-match Elo ratings plus ordinary home advantage (minimum three such matches)
  • The same club's away results against similar opponents, to test whether the ground itself stands out or the club is simply good
  • Conditions at the venue: latitude, temperature and daylight at kick-off, and artificial or natural pitch
  • Travel burden on visitors: distance, travel time and time-zone shift from their home city
  • Elofootball — Pre-match home win/draw/loss chances, turned into expected home points (3×win + draw) for visits by higher-rated clubs. The surplus is one model's figure, so it is an estimate.
  • UEFA — Official home teams, venues, scores and phases
  • StatMuse / Tutiempo (METAR) — Match-night temperature and wind as spot checks
  • Mapcarta / OpenStreetMap — Stadium latitude

5Who ranked

5 AIs, each building its own list of ten independently and naming a source for every place: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Kimi, MiMo.

6How the places were set

The same entry written differently by different AIs was counted as one. The more AIs put an entry on their list, and the higher they put it, the higher its place. "AI agreement" shows how many of the AIs had it on their own list. Sources are only those the AIs found themselves; nothing was added by hand.

  10. 10
    Real Madrid's Bernabéu

Real Madrid 2-1 Inter in 2026/27 matchday 1 is a weak data point, since Real is the stronger side.

What Claude noticed

Aspmyra is the only ground here with strong, source-backed evidence. Glimt lost once in 21 games there across all competitions, and the 2026/27 away form (0-5 at Bayern) shows the contrast with home.

Kairat Almaty had the biggest travel load in the 2025/26 league phase, about 22,388 km, yet finished with 1 point, so travel burden alone does not create a home surplus.

What Kimi noticed

Aspmyra's edge is measurable in layers: artificial turf with undersoil heating, 67°16′N latitude, an 8,270 capacity — and a 28-wins-in-34 home record that preceded this Champions League run, suggesting team and ground reinforce each other.

Bodø/Glimt also won 2-1 at San Siro to finish Inter off 5-2 on aggregate — the strongest evidence that some of the 'Aspmyra effect' is simply a very good team, not just the pitch and the cold.

What MiMo noticed

Aspmyra is not just 'cold and plastic': on 14 Oct 2026 the Bodø airport METAR (ENBO, 67.27°N) logged 9-10°C, light rain and 24-32 km/h wind at kick-off — a full weather profile, not a myth

The ground effect is measurable: since 2020 Bodø/Glimt have won 37 of 48 European home matches, while their away record is ordinary — the surplus lives at Aspmyra, not in the squad

Visiting managers argue about the surface in public: Mourinho said UEFA should not allow Champions League matches on plastic, while Glimt's own players say the turf is why their pressing game travels at home

Travel is real but not the whole story: Bodø is about 800 km north of Oslo with a long transfer, yet Belgrade and Istanbul also make elite visitors uncomfortable on atmosphere and tunnel alone
