02Worth knowing
What the AIs noticed while building the list.
Night share follows the rules more than the market. EUROCONTROL found about 89% of Cologne Bonn's cargo operations at night against about 39% at Frankfurt, and named Cologne Bonn Europe's busiest airport in the deep night.
Liège's night share fell from 59% to 34.5% of movements in four years, while its cargo grew 14% in 2025.
Leipzig/Halle's 2025 flights included 1,354 empty positioning flights, 352 of them at night.
A second runway works as night insurance. When a fence breach shut Leipzig/Halle's north runway on 17–18 October 2026, the south runway carried the DHL hub. At single-runway East Midlands or Luxembourg, the same event would stop everything.
03Questions people ask
What is the biggest cargo airport in Europe?
Frankfurt, with 1.99 million tonnes in 2025 by ACI EUROPE's count, just ahead of Istanbul (1.97M t) and Paris CDG (1.92M t). Istanbul was No. 1 in 2024.
Source ↗What is the busiest cargo airport in Europe?
By tonnes it is Frankfurt (1.99M t in 2025). By cargo flights it is Leipzig/Halle, with 49,948 freight flights in 2024, the most in the EU.
Source ↗Which European cargo airport never sleeps?
Leipzig/Halle flew about 73% of its 49,634 cargo flights in 2025 between 22:00 and 06:00. Liège and Cologne Bonn also run 24 hours with no curfew.
Source ↗Why do sources give different cargo totals for the same airport?
They count differently. Frankfurt's 2024 total appears as 1.95M t (Statista/ACI), 2.0M t (Eurostat) and 2.1M t (Fraport, including airmail).

What Gemini noticed
The European air cargo market is strictly bifurcated between passenger belly-cargo hubs (Frankfurt, Paris CDG, Amsterdam) that observe strict curfews and nocturnal express freight havens (Leipzig, Liège, Cologne, East Midlands) that depend on night flights for more than half their volume.
Runway redundancy is existential for 24-hour cargo hubs: when a security breach closed Leipzig/Halle's north runway on October 18, 2026, its independent south runway absorbed operations without stopping express traffic.

What Nemotron noticed
Heathrow (LHR) handles 1.4M tonnes with only 6% night movements — its cargo volume comes from belly freight on daytime passenger widebodies, not dedicated night freighters.

What MiMo noticed
Twocrowns, two airports: by tonnes Europe's cargo leader is Frankfurt (~2.1m t in 2025), but by cargo aircraft movements the busiest is Leipzig/Halle with 49,948 freight flights in 2024 — the tonnage table and the night-flights table pick different winners.
Nightis where freight lives: cargo flights make up about 26% of all night movements at European airports, and DHL, UPS and FedEx build their whole networks on the 23:00–06:59 sorting window.
Liègeis Europe's purest night machine: around 60 flights a night, 1.33m tonnes in 2025, and not a single scheduled passenger flight left since 4 January 2026.

What DeepSeek noticed
Köln-Bonn is the busiest airport in Europe during the deep night, not Frankfurt or Paris—its 24-hour permit and UPS/DHL express flows make it the benchmark for night cargo.
Leipzig/Halle’s 73% night share means a midnight–5 a.m. runway closure would hit nearly three-quarters of its cargo flights, yet its second runway kept DHL moving during the October 2026 breach.
Liège grew 13.9% in 2025 with no curfew—unrestricted 24/7 access is a commercial advantage that quota-limited hubs cannot match.

- 1Leipzig/Halle Airport (Germany)
DHL's 'night jump' sorts 150,000 parcels per hour mostly between midnight and 4 a.m. — DHL itself says an express hub 'cannot be operated' without 24-hour operation, and Leipzig has two independent 3,600 m runways to keep the sort going.
- 2Cologne Bonn Airport (Germany)
EUROCONTROL measured ~89% of its cargo movements in the deep night — Europe's most night-addicted big cargo airport, and it has three runways and no curfew to feed UPS's only European hub.
Source ↗ - 3Liège Airport (Belgium)
Europe's freighter heaven runs 24/7 with no curfew and grew ~14% in 2025 on Chinese e-commerce — but everything lands on one runway, making it the most night-dependent airport with a single point of failure.
- 4East Midlands Airport (UK)
The UK's busiest pure-freight airport does 45% of all its movements at night — nearly half the airport lives between 23:00 and 07:00 on a single runway.
Source ↗ - 5Luxembourg Airport (Luxembourg)
Cargolux's home base is the highest-tonnage single-runway cargo hub in Europe — when the runway closed 23:00-06:00 for works, every Cargolux arrival had to be individually re-planned around the curfew.
- 6Istanbul Airport (Türkiye)
Europe's cargo runner-up at 1.97M t runs around the clock with five runways — the only mega-hub that is both bigger than Frankfurt's tonnage and free of any night curfew.
Source ↗ - 7Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (France)
CDG still burns a grandfathered night quota — slots fell from 22,500 in 2003 to 17,877 by 2017 because unused night slots are permanently lost, and any airline without a quota may not fly at night at all.
Source ↗ - 8Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (Netherlands)
Only 3.7% of Schiphol's movements are at night — and Dutch politics is cutting even that: the night quota is falling from 32,000 to 29,000 and the cabinet now wants 27,000.
- 9Frankfurt Airport (Germany)
Europe's biggest cargo hub (1.99M t) is also its best sleeper: every scheduled flight is banned 23:00-05:00, and Lufthansa calls that six-hour silence 'a terrible blow for Germany as a business location'.
Source ↗ - 10London Heathrow Airport (UK)
Heathrow moves 1.55M t of cargo but schedules zero freight flights in its night quota period — 80% of its 5,800 permitted night movements are passenger arrivals landing 04:30-06:00.

What Kimi noticed
Europe's biggest cargo airport is its deepest sleeper: Frankfurt legally switches off 23:00-05:00, so a hypothetical midnight-to-5 a.m. runway closure there costs almost nothing — while at DHL's Leipzig the same closure would freeze the 150,000-parcels-per-hour night sort that next-day delivery depends on.
Night share is policy-made, not market-made: EUROCONTROL measured ~89% of Cologne's cargo operations at night versus ~39% at Frankfurt — the difference between no curfew and a hard ban, not between shippers.
By flight count, Leipzig/Halle — not Frankfurt or Paris — is the EU's busiest freight airport: 54,844 freight flights in 2023 vs 37,722 at CDG and 23,332 at Frankfurt (Eurostat), because integrator hubs fly smaller, more frequent freighters at night.
The night-cap squeeze is pushing express cargo east and south: Schiphol's quota is falling 32,000 → 29,000 (cabinet now proposing 27,000), while Liège and Cologne run with no curfew and Leipzig/Cologne grew fastest in 2025-26 — Liège posted +13.9% and Leipzig +12.7% (H1 2026).
