The costliest breach on this list involved nothing that was ever found. At Gatwick there was no drone and no operator, 96 'people of interest' were ruled out, and still about 1,000 flights were lost.
Airport Security Breach, Flights Diverted: 10 Worst Cases
Gatwick lost about 1,000 flights and 140,000 passengers in December 2018 to a drone that was never found. Leipzig/Halle's fence breach in October 2026 closed one runway, and DHL's night flights carried on.

02Worth knowing
What the AIs noticed while building the list.
The number of runways decides how bad a small breach gets. Gatwick's single runway turned sightings into a 33-hour shutdown, while Leipzig/Halle closed one of two runways and kept flying.
Disruption grows with the network, not with the breach: a 15-minute closure at Manchester still forced 7 diversions and left 17 aircraft holding overhead.
One sighting can close several airports. The November 2025 Brussels alert spread to Liège, Charleroi, Ostend, Eindhoven and Maastricht.
Copenhagen's prime minister called the 2025 closure 'the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure'. Nine months later, police said they could neither prove nor deny that any drone had been there.
03How we counted
In plain words, no formulas.
1The question
Top 10 Airport Security Incidents Where a Small Breach Caused the Biggest Travel Disruption
2Why this topic
Readers see whether a breach caused a short pause or a network-wide disruption, measured against how busy each airport normally is, which no incident list or delay tracker shows alone.
3Where it applies
Global airports
4What we looked at
- Time from the first breach or alert until the airfield was declared secure
- Flights cancelled, diverted or delayed during the closure, compared with the airport's normal traffic
- Whether the airport closed fully or kept part of it running, for example on a second runway
- Whether an intruder or vehicle was actually found
- Police and airport statements in BBC, Reuters, dpa and AFP reports — Time from first alert to all-clear, cause of the closure, and whether an intruder, vehicle or drone was found
- Flightradar24 diversion counts (cited in press coverage) — Inbound flights diverted during the closure window
- Airport statements on affected flights and passengers — Cancelled, diverted and delayed movements and stranded passengers
- Normal daily traffic in airport data and news reports — Flights and passengers normally due that day, used to size each disruption

The same entry written differently by different AIs was counted as one. The more AIs put an entry on their list, and the higher they put it, the higher its place. What Claude noticed
Unauthorised entry to the airside was until recently only an administrative offence. A bill (Drucksache 21/4322) would make it a crime, with up to 2 years in prison, or up to 5 if weapons or toxic substances are involved.
At Leipzig the fence breach of 17-18 Oct 2026 closed only the north runway, and traffic went on at the south runway. That is the practical value of a second runway at a 24-hour cargo hub.
The damaged Leipzig section is near three Russian Antonov aircraft grounded since 2022 under EU sanctions. It is unclear whether the incident is linked to an explosive-laden drone found in early August.

What ChatGPT noticed
The Leipzig/Halle October incident had a real runway consequence despite no intruder being found: a temporary north-runway closure, with flights continuing according to the supplied context.
Munich’s May 2024 fence breach was measured in cancellations and diversions: about 60 canceled flights and 14 diverted arrivals.

- 8Stuttgart Airport (Germany)

- 9Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (Netherlands)
Enclosing more than 45 kilometers of ditches and fences, environmental and climate activists penetrated the private jet perimeter fence on bicycles in 2022 and 2023.
- 10Geneva Airport (Switzerland)
A single 3,900-meter runway bordered by a 15-kilometer fence was shut down during the EBACE aviation fair when protesters cut the outer perimeter wire.
What Gemini noticed
Patrolling a 24-hour cargo airport is fundamentally harder than a daytime passenger hub: night-time visibility, massive perimeter lengths exceeding 35 km, and ongoing high-speed aircraft movements create blind spots for perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS).
In response to recurrent airfield intrusions, the German federal government tightened Section 19 of the Aviation Security Act (LuftSiG), upgrading unauthorized airside boundary breaches from administrative infractions to criminal offenses punishable by up to five years in prison.
Dual independent runway layouts provide vital resilience: while single-runway airports like Hamburg or Geneva face total operational paralysis during a fence breach, two-runway airports like Leipzig/Halle can isolate the compromised sector and maintain flights.

Thedrone that was never proved: Gatwick's 170 reported sightings (115 'credible') produced no photo, no wreckage and no culprit — two wrongly arrested neighbours were paid compensation, and the case closed after an 18-month, £800,000 investigation.
Disruptionscales with the network, not with the breach: 15 minutes of closed airfield at Manchester forced 7 diversions and 17 holding aircraft — the same runway rules that cost Copenhagen 35 diversions in four hours.
Onesighting, five airports: the November 2025 Brussels alert cascaded into Liège, Charleroi, Ostend, Eindhoven and Maastricht, spreading the closure to fields that never saw a drone.
Theasymmetry of cost: Gatwick's 33-hour shutdown cost airlines about $64.5m and pushed the airport to spend £5m on counter-drone kit — for an attack that was never evidenced.

What Kimi noticed
Copenhagen's twist is political: the Danish PM branded four hours of drone sightings 'the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure' and pointed at a foreign 'capable actor' — nine months later, in June 2026, police admitted they could neither prove nor deny any drone was ever there.
Recovery lag, not the closure itself, does the damage: Copenhagen's four-hour closure still meant 100+ cancellations the next day; Frankfurt's 30-minute March 2019 halt erased 60 flights; and repeat hits (Oslo twice in three nights, Munich two evenings running, Frankfurt four times in 2019-20) show the same airports keep paying.
