03How we counted

In plain words, no formulas.

1The question

Top 10 AI Companies by Latest Reported Revenue

2Why this topic

Anthropic's $16.8 billion quarter makes people ask which AI companies actually earn the most money today and how fast they are growing.

3Where it applies

Global AI industry, 2026

4What we looked at

  • Latest quarterly revenue or yearly run rate, with the way it is counted clearly shown
  • Growth compared with the previous quarter
  • Whether the company says it is profitable, and on what basis
  • Main source of money, such as business customers or personal subscriptions

5Who ranked

5 AIs, each building its own list of ten independently and naming a source for every place: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Kimi.

6How the places were set

The same entry written differently by different AIs was counted as one. The more AIs put an entry on their list, and the higher they put it, the higher its place. "AI agreement" shows how many of the AIs had it on their own list. Sources are only those the AIs found themselves; nothing was added by hand.

What Claude noticed

Anthropic's single quarter of $16.8B is more than 3.6 times its revenue for all of 2025.

OpenAI's annualized revenue figure fell by about $20B in a week (from about $70B to about $50B) because the two leading labs book cloud-partner sales differently, so the leaderboard depends on accounting.

Only about 5% of ChatGPT's 900 million users pay for a subscription, which is why business customers matter so much for revenue.

Anthropic's planned IPO could rival SpaceX's record raise; it reportedly aims to list before Thanksgiving.

This software-and-service ranking excludes chipmakers: Nvidia alone reported $89B of data-center sales in its latest quarter.

Gross training-data sales can overstate what a vendor keeps: Mercor paid roughly 60%–70% of gross revenue to contractors.

What Grok noticed

Anthropic's $16.8 billion quarter is a faster pace than OpenAI's roughly $50 billion annualized figure, and the two are not counted the same way: Anthropic books the gross amount of cloud-partner sales, while OpenAI books its own share.

Nvidia's latest quarter, $96.2 billion, is larger than Anthropic's quarter and OpenAI's yearly run rate combined, and about 92 percent of it is data-center hardware sold to businesses.

Profit is not one thing here. Anthropic told investors it was profitable on an adjusted basis, with positive free cash flow, an 85 percent adjusted gross margin, and an adjusted operating margin above 11 percent, while training and some other costs sit outside that line.

A research estimate puts roughly 75 to 85 percent of Anthropic's recurring revenue in paid API use by businesses and developers, and only about 10 percent in personal subscriptions, which use a much larger share of the computing.

What Kimi noticed

Anthropic's single quarter ($16.8B) is more than double Palantir's entire 2026 full-year revenue guidance (~$8.15B) — a sign of how fast the model makers are scaling relative to established AI software firms.

OpenAI effectively has two revenue numbers: a ~$50B annualized figure reported by the FT and a ~$70B figure shared with investors weeks earlier — a $20B gap caused purely by how 'annualized revenue' is counted, not by any change in sales.

NVIDIA's net income in one quarter (about $59.7B) is larger than OpenAI's entire annualized revenue (~$50B) — the chip supplier still captures more cash than the biggest model maker.

CoreWeave's contracted revenue backlog of ~$104B is roughly 40 times its quarterly revenue — much of the AI cloud boom is already sold, but not yet delivered or recognized as revenue.

What Gemini noticed

Anthropic's sequential acceleration: Anthropic's jump to $16.8 billion in Q3 2026 represents a 45% increase from Q2 ($11.6 billion) and over 250% from Q1 ($4.7 billion), marking one of the steepest pre-IPO revenue climbs in corporate history.

Profit strategy divergence: While OpenAI absorbs heavy net GAAP losses to finance frontier model compute at a $50 billion ARR, Anthropic reported its second straight quarter of adjusted operating profitability ahead of its planned public offering.

Enterprise revenue primacy: Consumer subscription revenue has become secondary to corporate infrastructure; the majority of AI market revenues now stem from enterprise API calls, private cloud hosting, and specialized compute hardware.
