Layoff trackers miss buyouts. Layoffs.fyi counts about 131,000–135,000 tech layoffs in 2026, and Microsoft's 60,000 exit offers aren't in it. But eligible isn't leaving: only about 30% took the smaller spring offer.

Oracle raised its capital spending from $21.2 billion to $55.7 billion in one fiscal year while its workforce fell by about 21,000 people, from 162,000 to 141,000.

02Worth knowing
What the AIs noticed while building the list.
Oracle's 10-K says AI adoption 'may continue to result' in workforce reductions. Microsoft says AI is not driving its buyout program.
Intel went from 108,900 to 85,100 staff in a year but cut capex. That is trimming, not swapping people for machines, so it is left off this list.
The counter-view: Stanford finds little evidence yet that AI is causing significant job losses. The cuts may be a correction of pandemic over-hiring.
03How we counted
In plain words, no formulas.
1The question
Top 10 Tech Giants Spending More on AI While Employing Fewer People
2Why this topic
The reader sees, company by company, money going into AI next to people going out the door, which a filing or a layoff tracker can't show alone.
3Where it applies
Global, the largest listed technology companies, 2025–2026
4What we looked at
- Change in capital spending over the last 12 months (data centers, chips, equipment)
- Change in headcount over the same 12 months
- Share of staff offered an exit or cut in 2025–2026, counting voluntary buyouts as well as layoffs
- Revenue per employee now compared with 3 years ago
- Added AI spending per job removed or offered a buyout
- SEC EDGAR company filings (10-K / 10-Q) — Reported year-end headcount and cash capital spending, e.g. Oracle's FY2026 10-K
- Goldman Sachs Asset Management — Hyperscaler capex: 2024 and 2025 actuals, 2026 estimates ($434B actual in 2025 vs $737B estimated for 2026 across five firms)

What Claude noticed
Oracle is the clearest case of machines replacing payroll. Capex rose by about $34.5B (+163%) while it shed about 21,000 people, and its own filing says AI adoption may lead to more cuts.
Layoff trackers understate Microsoft's reduction. The 60,000-person exit offer is more than seven times the 8,750 in the spring retirement program. The earlier program drew about 30% of eligible staff, and Microsoft expects a much smaller share this time.
The four largest hyperscalers plan about $725–735B of 2026 capex, up roughly 77–79% from about $410B in 2025. Capex is rising far faster than headcount is falling.
Microsoft's 2026 revenue was about $1.49M per employee after an 18% revenue rise, and it ended the year with 5,000 fewer staff.

What ChatGPT noticed
Microsoft's 60,000 eligible employees are not 60,000 layoffs. Its earlier program achieved roughly 30% participation among 8,750 eligible workers, while the company expects lower participation in the new program.
Reuters' July analysis projected $1.57 in additional capex for each $1 of additional operating cash flow among major hyperscalers by 2027 versus 2025, revealing that the AI buildout can pressure finances even when sales grow.
A large layoff count does not prove that AI replaced those employees. Analysts also point to pandemic-era overhiring, management layers, product changes and cost pressure.

Hyperscalers (Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta) are guiding a combined ~$720–745B of 2026 capex, mostly AI data centers and chips, while many simultaneously report net headcount declines.

Microsoft’s Oct 26 2026 voluntary offer to ~60,000 (~27%) is the largest single eligibility pool reported this year and comes after a first decade headcount drop.
