02More about the top three

The ranking is above. Here is more about the three places at the top: what they are, why they are here, and what is worth knowing.

This ranks how shaky a spot is, not table order: it mixes points, goal difference, tiebreakers and how hard the last games are.

1New York Red Bulls

No. 1 — New York Red Bulls. On the lists of 8 of 10 AIs; median place there: 1. It sits on the last playoff spot only on wins, with two straight losses, a bad goal difference and the hardest games left.

Did you know

  • In August 2000, Clint Mathis scored five goals in one match against Dallas for the club then called the MetroStars. The club's records page still lists it as the most goals by a player in a single MLS game.

What it is
East club holding the last playoff spot, 9th.
Its edge
Its run-in is the hardest, with Miami and Nashville still to play.
Who should know
Useful for fans tracking the East race: the last spot is the easiest to lose.
  • Points cushion over the line36 pts, 10 wins
  • HeadquartersHarrison

Wikipedia · Wikidata

Why it is here
  • New York has a −17 goal difference (39 scored, 56 conceded). That is the second-worst in the East, ahead of only Montréal at −26. It still sits 9th, because its 36 points are level with Toronto's.

  • Red Bulls and Toronto both have 36 points after 30 games. New York is 9th only because it has 10 wins to Toronto's 8. Columbus is one point back on 35, and New York City FC is on 34.

Did you know
  • Mike Grella scored the club's fastest goal in 2015, just 7 seconds after kickoff. The club's records page also lists a wild 5–5 draw with San Jose in 2004.

History
  • On March 9, 2006, Austrian energy drink maker Red Bull bought the club. It changed the name to Red Bull New York, and also changed the colors and logo. The team was the MetroStars before this.

Keep in mind
  • Early and late mistakes cost them against Toronto. The keeper misjudged a cross in the third minute, and Toronto scored again in the 82nd. Coach Michael Bradley called the goals conceded "crazy goals" at "really, really inopportune times."

  • The attack is quiet. The recap says they mostly shot from outside the box, and last season's top scorer, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, created no clear chances. Toronto is now level with them on points.

Where to go further
  • Open the team's ticket page to see the ways in: single-match tickets, flex plans, group packages and a student pass. Start with Single Match Tickets, the simplest option for a first visit. Game-day tickets are shown in the Red Bulls app, so download it before you go.

2FC Cincinnati

No. 2 — FC Cincinnati. On the lists of 8 of 10 AIs; median place there: 6. It has a three-point cushion, but the league's leakiest defense and a tough finish mean it can't relax.

Did you know

  • Cincinnati's worst MLS season was 2020, with 16 points. Just three years later, in 2023, they hit a club-record 69 points. That is one of the fastest turnarounds in the club's records.

What it is
East club in 8th, just above the playoff line.
Its edge
It has the biggest cushion of the three, three points over the line.
Who should know
Useful for fans who want to know a safe-looking spot can still slip.
  • Points cushion over the line8th, 39 points
  • HeadquartersUnited States

Wikipedia · Wikidata

Why it is here
  • Cincinnati has let in 71 goals in 30 games, the most of any Eastern club in the table. Orlando is next with 70. Its 62 goals scored are not enough to cover that, so its goal difference is −9.

  • Cincinnati is 8th with 39 points, just three above New York and Toronto on 36. It has 10 wins, 11 losses and 9 draws. Orlando in 7th has 41, so the gap above is small too.

Did you know
  • Cincinnati's record MLS win is 6–0 over San Jose in 2022. In the CONCACAF Champions Cup they won 9–0 against Universidad O&M in February 2026. The two-leg tie finished 13–0 on aggregate.

History
  • On May 29, 2018, the club's owners were awarded a Major League Soccer team. Cincinnati had first been announced in 2015 as a USL club, and it won the 2018 USL regular-season title before joining MLS in 2019.

Keep in mind
  • History is against leaky teams. In May, Cincinnati Magazine noted that since 2023 no team with the worst or second-worst defense in its conference has made the playoffs.

3Toronto FC

No. 3 — Toronto FC. On the lists of 7 of 10 AIs; median place there: 2. It is level on points but out on wins, held back by many draws, though its easier run-in gives it a way back.

Did you know

  • In 2017 Toronto won the first domestic treble in MLS history, after 22 seasons. They took the Canadian Championship, set the league's all-time regular-season points record, and finished 12 points clear of second place. They then won the MLS Cup 2–0 over Seattle.

What it is

It has the softest run-in of the chasing teams.
Who should know
Useful for fans watching who could sneak in: it needs wins and some help.
  • Points cushion over the line36 pts, 8 wins
  • HeadquartersToronto, Ontario

Wikipedia · Wikidata

Why it is here
  • Toronto has drawn 12 of its 30 games, tied with D.C. United for the most in the East. Only 8 wins leave it 10th on 36 points. Without so many draws, it would be much closer to the line.

  • On October 17, Toronto won 2–0 away at the Red Bulls, its biggest win of the season. That result left the two clubs level on 36 points, with Toronto behind only on wins.

Keep in mind
  • They are level on points with New York but behind on the first tiebreaker. Coach Robin Fraser says of the remaining games, "they're all must wins." One slip could end their season.

  • Their hopes also depend on other teams. Mihailovic said it seems the playoffs "might be in our hands going forward," but the article stresses that they need help and have only three games left.

In plain words, no formulas.

1The question

Top 10 Eastern Conference Clubs With the Shakiest Playoff Hopes

2Why this topic

The table shows where clubs are today. This ranking shows who has the least room for error over the last four games, and why.

3Where it applies

MLS Eastern Conference, final weeks of the 2026 regular season

4What we looked at

  • Points above or below the playoff line, from the league table
  • How hard each club's remaining opponents are, by those opponents' points per game
  • Recent form: points from the last five matches
  • Games left to play
  • MLS-sourced Eastern Conference table (Wikipedia, ESPN, BBC) — Matches played, W-D-L, points and goal difference; 9th place is the last playoff spot
  • MLSsoccer.com playoff forecast and format — Seeds if the season ended Oct 22; seeds 8 and 9 meet in a one-game Wild Card; wins are the first tiebreaker
  • PlayoffStatus.com / soccerstats remaining fixtures — Each club's remaining opponents, scored by the opponents' points or points per game
  • BBC / StandingsToday form tables — Points from the last five league matches

5Who ranked

The leading AIs, each building its own list of ten independently and naming a source for every place: Claude, ChatGPT, Meta, Nemotron, Nova, MiMo, Kimi, DeepSeek, Wenxin, Qwen.

6How the places were set

The same entry written differently by different AIs was counted as one. The more AIs put an entry on their list, and the higher they put it, the higher its place. "AI agreement" shows how many of the AIs had it on their own list. Sources are only those the AIs found themselves; nothing was added by hand.

  1. 1
    New York Red Bulls (2026)

Sitting on the line in 9th at 36 points, after two straight losses, a −17 goal difference (the worst of the top nine), and a 10-14-6 record.

  2. 2
    FC Cincinnati (2026)

Only 3 points above the line in 8th, yet with a −9 goal difference after conceding 71 goals, the most in the East outside Montréal.

    Source ↗
  3. 3
    Toronto FC (2026)

Level on 36 points with the Red Bulls but 10th on wins, with 12 draws, the most in the East.

    Source ↗
  4. 4
    Columbus Crew (2026)

One point behind the line at 35 and −1 in goal difference, with MLS reporting a late push, but 15 losses is the Crew's biggest burden.

    Source ↗
  5. 5
    Orlando City SC (2026)

Seventh with 41 points, 5 over the line, but a −12 goal difference and 13 losses means little room for another dip.

    Source ↗
  6. 6
    New York City FC (2026)

Two points back at 34 with only a −2 goal-difference gap to make up, but eight wins in 30 games is the lowest in the group.

    Source ↗
  7. 7
    D.C. United (2026)

Three points back at 33 with 12 draws, and a win over the Red Bulls is the best form I found, but it is a 4-0 defeat by Miami away from the line.

    Source ↗
  8. 8
    Atlanta United (2026)

Six points back with about 4 games left (12 points available) after 16 losses, so the hopes are mostly mathematical.

    Source ↗
  9. 9
    Philadelphia Union (2026)

Sixth on 46, 10 above the line, and a +13 goal difference; the cushion is real, so the risk is small.

    Source ↗
  10. 10
    Charlotte FC (2026)

Fifth on 47, 11 above the line, and 13 wins; only a collapse of four straight losses would bring them near.

    Source ↗

What Claude noticed

The line is the 9th place: the Red Bulls and Toronto have 36 points each, but the Red Bulls hold ninth because they have won more games (10 vs 8), and wins are the first tiebreaker.

Nine points separate 9th (36) and 14th (30), so four games left (12 points) keep five clubs in the race. Decision Day is Nov 7.

Nashville lead the East with 70 points, 15 more than Miami, which shows the top of the table is settled and the fight is for the Wild Card.

  1. 1
Toronto FC — MLS Eastern Conference, 2026

Level on 36 points with ninth-place New York, Toronto has no cushion and needs a result in a direct race with the playoff line.

    Source ↗
  2. 2
New York Red Bulls — MLS Eastern Conference, 2026

Ninth is technically inside the field, but New York's 36 points are tied with Toronto and six points clear of 14th-place Atlanta.

    Source ↗
  3. 3
Columbus Crew — MLS Eastern Conference, 2026

Just one point off the last playoff place, Columbus has little room for a stumble and four matches to make up ground.

    Source ↗
  4. 4
New York City FC — MLS Eastern Conference, 2026

Two points outside the line, NYCFC also had the conference's weakest recent five-game return in the dated snapshot: two points.

    Source ↗
  5. 5
Atlanta United — MLS Eastern Conference, 2026

Six points below ninth with only four matches left, Atlanta's 30 points leave a narrow route back into contention.

    Source ↗
  6. 6
CF Montréal — MLS Eastern Conference, 2026

The conference's 25-point bottom side is 11 points off ninth with four matches left.

    Source ↗
  7. 7
Orlando City — MLS Eastern Conference, 2026

Seventh on 41 points, Orlando is still in the playoff places but sits only two points above the eighth-place wild-card position.

    Source ↗
  8. 8
FC Cincinnati — MLS Eastern Conference, 2026

Eighth on 39 points, Cincinnati has only a three-point margin over ninth and still needs points to secure a place.

    Source ↗
  9. 9
Philadelphia Union — MLS Eastern Conference, 2026

Sixth on 46 points, Philadelphia is above the immediate danger zone, but the snapshot still says three additional points clinch a playoff place.

    Source ↗
  10. 10
Charlotte FC — MLS Eastern Conference, 2026

Fifth on 47 points, Charlotte's margin is sizable, though two more points were still needed for mathematical clinching in the snapshot.

    Source ↗

What ChatGPT noticed

The ninth-place boundary is unusually crowded: New York and Toronto were tied on 36, Columbus was one point back, and NYCFC two points back.

New York's poor goal difference is an extra warning sign: its −17 was worse than five of the six teams immediately below it, according to Nashville's preview.

The race is not only about the playoff line: Orlando and Cincinnati occupied seventh and eighth, with five and three points respectively above ninth.

The dated standings snapshot listed NYCFC with only two points from its last five, making form a sharper concern than its two-point deficit alone suggests.

  1. 1
    New York Red Bulls

9th place (playoff line), 0 pts cushion, 2 straight losses, 3 games left vs top-4 sides — the definition of 'shaky'.

  2. 2
    D.C. United

10th place, 3 pts back, 1 win in 7, must win at Cincinnati and home vs Miami — schedule is a wall.

  3. 3
    CF Montréal

11th, 5 pts behind, 4 games left but 3 on road vs playoff teams — mathematically alive, realistically dead.

  4. 4
    Chicago Fire FC

12th, 6 pts back, 4 games left including 2 vs top-6 — Shaqiri's brilliance not enough to fix defense.

  5. 5
    Philadelphia Union

7th but only 3 pts above line, 0 wins in 5 (3 pts), brutal finish vs MIA, CIN, ORL — the highest-placed 'shaky' team.

  6. 6
    Atlanta United

8th, 1 pt above line, 4 pts from last 5, but 2 home games left vs bottom feeders — schedule saves them if they show up.

  7. 7
    Orlando City SC

6th with 5-pt buffer but 2 pts from last 15 points, defense collapsed — 3 games vs top-7 to finish.

  8. 8
    Charlotte FC

13th, 8 pts back with 4 games — miracle math required, but easiest schedule (1.3 PPG) keeps a pulse.

  9. 9
    New England Revolution

14th, 10 pts adrift, 3 games left — mathematically eliminated if Red Bulls win tonight, functionally dead.

  10. 10
    Toronto FC

15th (last), 14 pts behind, eliminated weeks ago — the only club with zero playoff hope, playing for 2027.

What Nemotron noticed

The Red Bulls (9th) and D.C. United (10th) are separated by 3 points but face the two hardest remaining schedules in the East (1.87 and 1.93 PPG) — the playoff line is a trap door, not a cushion.

Philadelphia Union (7th) have the worst form in the conference over the last 5 games (3 pts) and the hardest run-in (1.97 PPG) — they are the most likely 'safe' team to fall out.

What MiMo noticed

Threeclubs are level on 36 points with four games left — Red Bull New York, FC Cincinnati and Toronto — and the last playoff place comes down to tiebreaks: New York has 10 wins, Cincinnati 9, Toronto 8.

Run-inexplains the panic in Harrison: Toronto close with Columbus, D.C., Atlanta and Philadelphia, while the Red Bulls must play Miami, New England and Nashville before they see Atlanta.

Columbushave won four of five — against Inter Miami, Charlotte, Cincinnati and Montréal — yet still sit 11th; in Cincinnati they were outshot 23-3 and won 2-0.

Theformat makes eighth and ninth treacherous: seeds 8 and 9 play a single-elimination Wild Card on Nov. 18, and the winner goes straight to Nashville, who have already clinched the Shield.

What Kimi noticed

The ninth-place team has the hardest run-in in the conference: RBNY's remaining opponents average 51.0 points (Miami 55, at New England 52, at Nashville 67) — while tonight they host the one opponent every club moves stadiums for, Lionel Messi.

Same points, opposite schedules: RBNY and Toronto both sit on 36, but Toronto's remaining opponents average 36.0 points (easiest in the bubble) against RBNY's 51.0 (hardest) — and Toronto won 2–0 at RBNY on Oct 17 to hold the head-to-head.

D.C. United's finish is a pure bubble gauntlet: all four remaining games are against clubs within six points of the line (Cincinnati 39, Toronto 36, Columbus 35, NYCFC 34) — no gimmes, but every win is a six-pointer.

The top of the East is already settled: Nashville clinched on Sept 19, sit on 67 points — 12 clear of Miami — while the entire drama is compressed between 5th (Charlotte, 47) and 13th (D.C., 33), an 11-point band with four games left for nine teams chasing five spots.

    Source ↗

What DeepSeek noticed

The race is compressed: seventh-place Orlando has 41 points and 12th-place NYCFC has 34, so one weekend can move a club from safety to outside the line.

The best form in the race belongs to a team outside the line: Columbus has taken 12 points from its last five and still sits 11th.

Ninth is not dead in 2026: seeds 8 and 9 meet in a single wild-card match, so the last spot is a playoff berth, not a consolation.

What Qwen noticed

The Eastern Conference bubble is historically tight: Just two points separated New York City FC in eighth place from New York Red Bulls in 10th during the late-season push, making every match a virtual elimination game.

Expanded playoff format: In 2026, 18 teams qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs, with the 8th and 9th seeds from each conference competing in a Wild Card round.
