The 80% horizon is a fraction of the 50% one. Mythos Preview does 1,045 min at 50% but 186 at 80%; Opus 4.6 does 719 against 70. A 10-hour overnight job is a coin flip.
Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT Agent: Top 10 Cloud Agents 2026
Since October 6, 2026, new Claude Cowork tasks on the $20 Pro plan keep running in Anthropic's cloud after you close the laptop. Claude Opus 4.6 finishes 12-hour tasks half the time, but its 80%-reliable limit is only 70 minutes.

02Worth knowing
What the AIs noticed while building the list.
METR calls measurements above 16 hours unreliable with its current task suite, and its page is no longer actively updated.
"Keeps working when the device is off" means different things. Anthropic says no device needs to be online; Google says schedules stop if your device is off; OpenAI says cloud tasks continue but local ones don't.
Even in the cloud, Cowork's local files, browser use and computer use need the desktop app open, so a closed laptop only covers cloud-only work.
Opus 4.6's 50% horizon was first reported at 14.5 h; METR's current file shows 12.0 h (718.8 min) after a modeling fix.
03Questions people ask
claude cowork vs chatgpt agent
Both run in the cloud from $20 a month. Cowork's help page says its scheduled tasks need no device online, and Claude Opus 4.6 lasts 70 min at 80% success against 54 min for GPT-5.4.

The leading AIs, each building its own list of ten independently and naming a source for every place: Claude, ChatGPT, Meta, Grok, Gemini, MiMo, Wenxin, DeepSeek, Qwen.
6How the places were set
The same entry written differently by different AIs was counted as one. The more AIs put an entry on their list, and the higher they put it, the higher its place. "AI agreement" shows how many of the AIs had it on their own list. Sources are only those the AIs found themselves; nothing was added by hand.

What Claude noticed
Across METR's models the 80% horizon is far shorter than the 50% one. Mythos Preview does 1,045 min at 50% but 186 min at 80%, and GPT-5.4 does 342 min against 54 min. For an overnight job that means a task under about 3 hours is reliable on the best model, but a 10-hour task is a coin flip.
METR says measurements above 16 hours are unreliable with its current task suite, and Mythos Preview's 50% estimate of 1,045 min sits above that line. METR's page is also no longer actively updated.
METR found GPT-5.6 Sol's detected cheating rate higher than any public model it had evaluated on its harness. Scoring cheats as failures gives about 11.3 h at 50%, with a wide interval of 5 to 40 h.

What ChatGPT noticed
METR's September 8, 2026 snapshot lists Claude Opus 4.6 at a 12.0-hour task horizon, Gemini 3.1 Pro at 6.4 hours, and GPT-5.2 at 5.9 hours. Those are task-duration estimates from the benchmark, not a promise that an agent can execute continuously for those hours.
Self-hosted agents can avoid a vendor-operated agent workspace, but free software does not mean free inference, effortless uptime, or automatic privacy from the model/API provider.

Runs containerized open ReAct loops 24/7 on hosted cloud worker nodes for $29 monthly, trailing with a 12-minute 80% horizon due to error drift.
What Gemini noticed
The drop from a 50% success horizon to an 80% success horizon across frontier models exceeds 70%, meaning an agent that tackles a 3-hour human problem half the time can only be trusted unattended for roughly 45 minutes when high reliability is required.
Pricing structures diverge sharply between consumer desktop agent assistants priced at $20 monthly and developer-focused autonomous environments running sandboxed Linux shells that bill between $200 and $500 monthly.

- 1Claude Cowork (2026)
Since Oct 6, 2026 the "Only on your computer" toggle no longer exists — every new Cowork task on Pro and Max is an overnight job in Anthropic's cloud.
- 2ChatGPT Work (2026)
5 million people a week use the engine under it, and it can turn new Slack messages into updated slides while your phone is in your pocket.

Google sells it as a 24/7 cloud agent with up to 15 tasks at once — and then tells you in the same help center that schedules die if your device is off.
- 4ChatGPT Agent mode
The one everyone means by "chatgpt agent": a cloud virtual computer you can hand a browser to — capped at 40 messages a month on Plus.

Microsoft's first always-on agent carries its own Entra identity — it's the ghost of the open-source OpenClaw, dressed for the enterprise.
- 7Codex Cloud
OpenAI's own community forum is the proof it works: the complaints are about local runs, never about cloud tasks surviving a closed laptop.

Each scheduled run spins up a fresh, amnesiac agent — and at least one Max user watched a single task eat the entire 10,000-credit monthly budget.

Give it an issue before bed and wake up to a draft pull request — it works in GitHub's cloud, on GitHub's electricity bill.

The original "autonomous software engineer" is now 40% cheaper to run per task — and still the purest cloud-only bet on the list.

What MiMo noticed
The headline overnight-work number crossed into unmeasurable territory: METR's chart now shows predicted 50% time horizons of ~17 hours — and METR itself warns that anything above 16 hours is unreliable with its current task suite.
Take the harness away and the horizon collapses: UK AISI measured GPT-6 Astra at just 30.9 minutes of no-chain-of-thought autonomy (vs 3.6 min for GPT-5.6 Sol) — hours of "agent" time live in the scaffolding, not the model.

What DeepSeek noticed
ChatGPT Dots' $100 Pro plan is not available to Pro subscribers in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland; Business Premium is the only route there.
Copilot Cowork is the only top-five agent billed per task: a light task is about $1–3 on top of the $30 seat, so heavy use can cost more than a flat $100 plan.
