GitHub Trending AI Tools 2026: Stars vs Installs

The same REA ranking gives 234,477 and 347,463 stars from snapshots six days apart; the growth is not independently verified here.

  • No. 1: REA (morluto/rea)
  • 10 places

01Final list

The leading AIs each built their own list of ten independently. Here is one result that is easy to check: every place has a reason, a source, and the list of AIs that included it.

Order: from most to least AI agreement.

A bright badge means this AI put the entry on its list. A dim badge means it did not.

  1. 1

    REA (morluto/rea)

One answer cites 347,463 stars and 415,576 weekly npm downloads; another gives 300,000+ stars and 307,234 downloads, so both figures are disputed.

Included it: Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, Qwen. Did not include: Gemini, Meta.

03How we counted

In plain words, no formulas.

1The question

Top 10 AI Developer Tools of 2026 Where GitHub Stars and Real Installs Differ Most

2Why this topic

The reader can see which hyped tools developers actually install. The trending page and the download counts each tell only half of that story.

3Where it applies

Global, open-source AI coding-agent tools released or trending in 2026

4What we looked at

  • Star count and star growth in the first weeks after launch
  • Weekly npm or PyPI downloads of the same tool
  • Repository age compared with the speed of its star growth
  • Share of stars from suspicious or empty accounts, where a study or tool has measured it
  • GitHub repository pages and API — Current stars and repository age; snapshots change over time, and stars measure attention rather than installs.
  • npm download API — Weekly package downloads; counts can include repeat installs, CI, and mirrors and are not unique users.
  • StarScout study — Estimates suspicious star activity across GitHub; it does not establish a verified suspicious-star share for each tool here.

5Who ranked

The leading AIs, each building its own list of ten independently and naming a source for every place: Gemini, Claude, Meta, ChatGPT, Grok, Qwen.

6How the places were set

The same entry written differently by different AIs was counted as one. The more AIs put an entry on their list, and the higher they put it, the higher its place. "AI agreement" shows how many of the AIs had it on their own list. Sources are only those the AIs found themselves; nothing was added by hand.

What Claude noticed

Codex CLI has 13,153,561 weekly npm downloads on 130,164 stars. OpenCode has 2,123,309 downloads on 218,854 stars. The tool with fewer stars is installed about six times more.

claw-code has 107,890 forks on 194,950 stars (about 55%), against about 16% for Codex (20,505 forks on 130,164 stars). Its README calls it a museum exhibit rather than a product.

The ICSE 2026 StarScout study found about 6 million suspected fake stars. AI and LLM repos were the largest non-malicious category of fake-star recipients, but the effect on rankings lasts less than two months.

Gemini CLI was retired for most users on 18 June 2026 (per Pinggy), yet its npm package still logged 227,214 downloads in the week of 12-18 Oct.

What ChatGPT noticed

JetBrains reports Codex adoption rising from 3% in January 2026 to 16% in May–July, a survey measure that tells a different story from GitHub stars.

A 2026 global study estimates six million suspected fake GitHub stars overall and finds campaigns increasingly target AI/LLM repositories; it does not establish that any specific tool in this ranking bought stars.

OpenCode often leads stars while Claude Code leads actual workplace usage surveys.

What Qwen noticed

CMU researchers found that nearly 17% of all GitHub repos with 50+ stars were targeted by fake star campaigns by mid-2024.

OpenClaw broke GitHub's star records, yet its actual adoption happens outside npm/PyPI via direct Git clones and Docker containers.

Star farms charge as little as $0.03 to $0.90 per star, making it cheap to trend on GitHub without writing a single line of useful code.
