  • No. 1: Saido Berahino (West Brom to Stoke, 2017)

01Final list

The leading AIs built their own top-ten lists independently. Above is one combined result that is easy to check: every place has a reason, the AIs that included it and, where the AIs gave one, a source.

Order: from most to least AI agreement.

A bright badge means this AI put the entry on its list. A dim badge means it did not.

02Worth knowing

What the AIs noticed while building the list.

Exit followed by the drop is common but not the rule. Leicester, West Brom, Stoke and Köln went down the next season, while West Ham and Lille did fine without their rebels. This is a small sample, not proof.

Berahino's figures are disputed at both ends. West Brom said Spurs' 2015 bids never passed £21m, while Spurs said £25m. His 2017 fee is £12m initial or £15m with add-ons.

Arnautovic's 2017 fee ranges from £20m to £25m depending on the outlet, mostly because some count the add-ons and some do not.

03How we counted

In plain words, no formulas.

1The question

Top 10 Post-Bust-Up Transfers: Player Market Value vs. Team's Relegation Probability

2Where it applies

Top 5 European Leagues

3What we looked at

  • The change in the player's market value and subsequent transfer fee after a public fallout.
  • The team's expected goals (xG) against and probability of relegation in the season following the player's exit.
  • Transfermarkt — Market values and recorded transfer fees. Per-player value histories were not retrieved, so the fees here come from news reports.
  • CIES Football Observatory — Model-based transfer value estimates from age, contract, position, performance and international status
  • Opta / The Analyst supercomputer — Relegation probabilities from simulated seasons. Historical figures for these cases were not confirmed, so the final league position stands in for them.
  • FBref / Opta — Team and player xG. xG-against for these seasons was not retrieved, so goals conceded stands in for it.
  • League season tables (Wikipedia / league sites) — Final position, points, goals for and against, and relegation outcome

The leading AIs, each building its own list of ten independently and naming a source for every place: Claude, ChatGPT, Meta, Nemotron, Grok, Gemini, Wenxin.

5How the places were set

The same entry written differently by different AIs was counted as one. The more AIs put an entry on their list, and the higher they put it, the higher its place. "AI agreement" shows how many of the AIs had it on their own list. Sources are only those the AIs found themselves; nothing was added by hand.

  7. 7
Max Meyer, Schalke to Crystal Palace (2018)

Schalke let a 22-year-old internationalist walk for €0 after a public row with their sporting director, and fell into a relegation scrap before going down in 2021.

Dimitri Payet, West Ham to Marseille (2017)

West Ham made a £14m profit on a striking star and still finished 11th, so this case shows a toxic exit that did no damage.

What Claude noticed

Of the eight cases I could verify, three clubs went down in the season after the star left or shortly after (Leicester, West Brom, Villa), and Stoke followed the Arnautovic sale with relegation too. That makes four relegations from eight, which is a small sample, not proof. Payet is the case where the sale cost West Ham nothing visible.

Villa lost their captain by a release clause, not by a feud, and finished on 17 points. The tipping point can be the loss of leadership as much as the loss of talent.
