02Worth knowing
What the AIs noticed while building the list.
The Tourmalet and the Col du Portet appear in the same stage for the first time. There is no Alpe d'Huez, Ventoux, Galibier or Izoard, so the Tour is likely to be settled in the Pyrenees.
Recent one-day gaps between the top two: Gavarnie 2026 2:38 (a third of the final 6:26 margin), Hautacam 2025 2:10, the Combloux time trial 2023 1:38. The 7:35 often quoted for 2023 is Pogačar's overall deficit after Courchevel, not a one-stage gap.
Total climbing is given as 53,450 m by most outlets and about 53,000 m by others. Elevation models and route versions differ, so per-stage metres are approximate.
Early reports said Montmartre would be dropped from the Paris stage. Newer stage tables list three Montmartre circuits with Rue Lepic before the Champs-Élysées.
03How we counted
In plain words, no formulas.
1The question
Top 10 Stages of the 2027 Tour de France Most Likely to Decide the Yellow Jersey
2Why this topic
Readers get the stages that will actually decide the 2027 Tour, found by setting the organisers' profiles against measured climb data and past time gaps, which no single route table shows.
3Where it applies
Tour de France 2027, men's race, all 21 stages from Edinburgh (2 July 2027) to Paris-Montmartre
4What we looked at
- Official climbing metres and number of categorised climbs, set against how late in the stage the hardest climbs fall
- Measured gradient, length and altitude of the key climbs (Tourmalet and others), checked against ASO's profile drawings
- Time gaps between the top two overall riders on comparable stages in the 2022–2026 Tours
- Where the stage falls in the three weeks (fatigue), plus likely wind and weather exposure
- ASO / letour.fr, Grand Départ 2027 route presentation — Official stage towns, distances and named climbs (e.g. Côte de Caerffili 2 km at 8.1%)
- ProCyclingUK stage table — Distance, climbing metres (for the mountain stages), named climbs and gradients for each stage
- Domestique Cycling route report — Climb lengths and gradients (Grand Colombier, Bisanne, Marie Blanque, Pech-David) and who each stage favours
- Climbfinder — Independently measured length, gradient and altitude of the key climbs (Col du Portet, Col du Tourmalet)

What Claude noticed
The two time trials total 71 km, the most since 2012. The route also includes only six mountain stages and three summit finishes across 53,450 m of climbing.
The Tourmalet and the Portet are in the same stage (stage 18) for the first time, per Domestique. The Tourmalet is climbed before the 16 km at 8.7% finish at 2,215 m.
In 2026 Pogačar's win at Gavarnie on stage 6 produced a 2:38 gap in one afternoon. The final margin over Evenepoel was 6:26, so one Pyrenean stage can be worth a third of the whole result.
In 2023, Vingegaard's lead grew by 1:38 in the Combloux time trial. A day later on the Courchevel stage, Pogačar fell back to a 7:35 deficit. Time trials and summit finishes can decide the race back to back.

What ChatGPT noticed
The 71 km of individual time trials make 2027 unusually important for riders who can sustain high power on flatter courses. The time trials are not merely supporting events: they could establish the margins that the climbers must erase.
The Col du Portet stage stands out not simply because of its summit finish, but because the reported 5,400 m of climbing is followed by another mountain stage the next day. Recovery and repeated attacks could matter more than a single spectacular ascent.
The first British stages are not irrelevant to the overall classification. Stage 3 includes two substantial climbs in its latter portion, and weather, positioning and crashes can create early time losses even when the stage is not a traditional mountain stage.
The route has only three summit finishes according to published route coverage. That makes the time trials, rolling stages and the placement of mountain stages especially important: the most decisive stage is not necessarily the one with the most climbing.
